What's in a name?

``Providence'' star Melina Kanakaredes got to keep hers, Stefanie Federkiewicz did not. She became Stefanie Powers.

``Americanizing'' names, or giving them a punchier ring, used to be standard practice in Hollywood. Kirk Douglas once was Issur Demsky. Bea Arthur was born Bernice Frankel. Alan Alda arrived as Alphonso d'Abruzzo.

But in the 1960s, traditional names started to go into cardiac arrest. David, Mary, John and Jane began giving way to the likes of Moon Unit Zappa, Chastity Bono and Zowie Bowie.
