NSW: Storm affected schools re-open
SYDNEY, Aug 28 AAP - Schools closed for repairs in the wake of a violent weekend windstormwould all resume classes today, the NSW Department of Education said.
About 20 schools, mostly on the NSW South Coast, were closed after winds of up to 120kphhit the state's south and east on Sunday afternoon.
"About 20 schools had been closed, but that number has been gradually reduced sinceMonday," department spokesman Mark Davis said.
"They were shut down because they had no electricity and/or were damaged in some way."
Deputy director-general of schools Alan Laughlin said State Emergency Service (SES)volunteers had been crucial in getting schools re-opened as quickly as possible.
"Special mention ... must go to the SES volunteers, who did a fantastic job in oftendifficult conditions," Dr Laughlin said.
"Acknowledgement should also be made of the patience and understanding of parents whosechildren were unable to attend school as normal."
Meanwhile, Energy Australia said in a statement that it had "restored power to almost800 homes overnight, with fewer than 100 to be restored by lunchtime today".
"Some other homes can only be reconnected after building repairs are completed by theirowners," the statement said.
